Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
