Toto Wolff Preparing to Sell Stake Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff with Mercedes F1 team
Team Principal Wolff has guided Mercedes to record-breaking success in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to corporate structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the growth in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned more than $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film ever released.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
