Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
